History and Milestones: Emma Bridgewater, formerly Emma Rice, established the company out of a personal quest for a suitable cup and saucer as a gift for her mother in 1985. Dissatisfied with the available options, Emma decided to create her own designs, leading to the inception of Emma Bridgewater. In 1995, the company acquired a Victorian factory site in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, solidifying its commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Noteworthy milestones include a royal visit discussing a significant collection for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and an official visit from Catherine, Princess of Wales, in 2015.
Products and Production: Emma Bridgewater’s earthenware is crafted using traditional techniques of manufacture and decoration. Techniques such as hand-applied decoration using sponges, brushes, and transfers contribute to the distinctive charm of their products. Mould casting, fettling, sponging, and firing are integral steps in the production process. The revival of historic techniques, such as sponge painting, is a testament to the company’s commitment to preserving British pottery traditions. In addition to tableware, Emma Bridgewater offers a diverse range of homeware and gifts, extending its iconic designs to textiles, glass, tin, stationery, and melamine.
Founder and Owners: Named after its founder and owner, Emma Bridgewater (formerly Emma Rice), the company has deep roots in family and creativity. Emma’s ex-husband, Matthew Rice, an artist and illustrator, co-ran the company, contributing his designs, including the Birds range. Although the couple amicably divorced after 30 years of marriage, Matthew Rice continues to design for the company. Both Emma Bridgewater and Matthew Rice are honorary graduates of Staffordshire University. In 2013, Emma Bridgewater was appointed a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to British industry.
Community Engagement: Beyond ceramics, Emma Bridgewater actively engages with the community. The “Festival in a Factory,” hosted at the Stoke-on-Trent factory, has become a notable literary event, featuring renowned speakers from various fields. Emma Bridgewater’s commitment to rural preservation is evident through her role as the President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and her patronage of the Heritage Crafts Association.
